KAWHIA.
It is seldom that we receive reliablo intelligence of what is going on at Kawhia, the veryhotbed of Maori sedition and Hau Hau superstition. The following extract from a private letter received by a gentleman in town has been placed at our disposal : — "May- 17, 1865. " You want to bear the news from Xawhia. You sbiill have all that I know. In the first place Pai Marirism is in the ascendant. In fact, I do not think that there is another part of the island in which the natives are in such a state of excitement, or rather frenzy, or whatever you may like to call it. The Excelsior arrived here the day before yesterday, and if it had not been that she had some of the Governor's " pet lambs" [a portion of the Kawau 200, Ed. iNT Z.H.J on board, she would have been dragged on shore, and the men perhaps massacred. This risk any vessel runs in coming in here. You may imagine by this what a state matters arc in here.
•' The ' Kupapns' are obliged to look quietly on. What can they do when there are in J\ awhia at the present moment some 500 or 600 of armed Hau hau fanatics. -'sand 's harlots are made high priestesses." The Excelsior sail's to-niorrnw for Taranaki.
