Colonel Morant has returned from ehc front, after being up on a tour of inspection with Colonel Williams, Koyal Artillery, Captain Bishop, being senior officer in his absence, he was in command. Captain Bishop is attached to the transport, but belongs to the 18th Royal Irish. This gentleman is not living here, but since coming he has proved to be a good officer and a kind and humane man. Tuesday, December 13. A well-contested cricket match was yesterday played between Nos. 2 and 3 Company's 4th Wnikato Militia, at the " Flying Column Redoubt," Upper Wairoa. Jiusign Poyne and Major Slack, of the Wairoa, acted as umpires. The batting of No. 2 company was very good, and the fielding of No. 3 excellent. Ensign Blackmore and Captain Mellish played very well in eed. Subsequently there was a couple of foot rates for £1 a side, in which Private Faulkner, of No. 2 company, was the winner. There wat a good muster of spectators present, including a email number of women. It is indeed pleasant, to find oflicers and men so united, and constantly renewing the bonds of friendship and good feeling by having such amusements. A poor fellow named James Cocklin, a bushman, working up at the Moaka, nearly got his leg broken by the fall of a tree. Through the kindness of Dr. Ivelby, he was allowed to stay at the Mililin Hospital last night, and it is expected Mr. Millsop. R.M., ' will hand him on to the Provincial Hospital some j time this morning. |
