WELLINGTON. October 10.
It is stated that Judge O'Brien, of the Nativo Land Court 19 to have tho Wairu rapa district assigned to him, and that his jurisdiction will extend to Hastings in Hawkes Bay. There was glorious weather to-day for the opening of the rowing season, And the procession of boats, in which the Star, Wellington, and Oriental Club's took part, as well as the Petone and Wellington Navals and torpedo cutter, was very successful. The cricket season also opened this afternoon with practice matches. The Minister for Public Works will probably leave for the West Coast of tho South Island on Monday or Tuesday. Since the reduction of the telephone chargps the following is the approximate number of applications for connections : Wellington, 29 ; Christchurch, 27 ; Dunedin, 20 ; Auckland, 16 ; Invercargill, (5 ; Napier, 4 ; Oamaru, 3 ; Timaru, 1. Total, 106.
