DUNEDIN. October 1.
The final meeting of shareholders of tho Now Zealand Exhibition Company was held to-day. After the liqudators statement of accounts was adopted, as ic was thought tho books and pnpurs would in future years prove an interesting record, it was decided to preaervo them in the University library, and to hand over at the end of three months any surplus that might remain of the L30 at present in hntul to meet ilio claims of shareholders who havo not applied for a dividend, to tho Reserves Conservation Society, October 10. At the City Police Court to-day, May Brown was charged with ill-treating her stepdaughter, 9 years of age. The medical evidonco showed that the child was covered with bruises, but tho evidence of the family was to the effect that there had beon no unnecessary chastisement, and that the wet dress in which tho girl went to school sho put on of her own accord. The case was dismissed, tho Bonch cautioning accused to treat tho child with more care owing to her weakly condition. October 11. The Bureau of Industries has received applications from 320 persons for employment on the Otago Central railway work. This number may be assumed to bo in excess of tho unemployed, as applications havo been received from settlers about Middlomarch and also from thoso at present in employment temporarily, who aro desirous of exchanging it for work of longer duration.
