January 28. Hall and Forbes, rope makers, are about to lei up complete maohinery for the manufacture of all kinds of t trine by steam power. Prices, even with hand spinning, are already lower than the imported gooda. They are offering to purchase any quantity of colonial grown hemp flax. The following is a list of properties destroyed by fire this morning : E. Hornby, house and shop ; S. Johnston, one empty shop ; J. Ayre, shop (the last three being the property of G. P. Wilson) ; R. Allen, house and shop ; and Isaac Wilson, house and out-buildings. lusurances .-—Hornby's building, L2OO in
the South British — loss, L4OO over insurance ; 6. P. Wilson, L3OO in the South British and L2OO io the Northern — loss, L 350 over insurance : Johnston was uninsured, and his loss is L 10 0; Ayre,Lso in the South British and L7O in the Rational ; Allen, L5OO in the South British — loss, Ll5OO over insurance ; J. Wilson, L4OO on the building and L2OO on furniture in the New Zealand- lose, L2OO over insurance. The Australians arrived at Ohristchurch at 8.20 p.m. They were met by E. C. J. Stevens, president of the Association, and the Canterbury Fifteen, and an immense crowd, who cheered vociferously. They were driven in a four horse drag to tho Royal Hotel, and were followed by the Canterbury Fifteen in a similar conveyance. Altogether it was a most enthusiastic reception.
