THIRD DAY— SATURDAY, 24th FEB.

The "events" contested on this day had not been advertised, but a considerable amount of sport was enjoyed by all those who visited the race course for the third time. The sum of L40 having been subscribed by the merchants of Oamai u, or at all events by three of the principal firms, it was resolved that this amount be run for in one event, and other races to follow. The following is the result of the racing : —

MERCHANTS' PURSE. Handicap Sweepstakes, of L2 2s. each, "witb. L40 added. Open to all. Distance, two miles. 4 entries. Q-. MTherson's Zohrab, 5 yrs, 9s fc 41b (Guinness; 1 D. Brown's cb. g Bendigo, aged, 8st 91b ... ... 0 J. Thomas' ch g Regnum, 6 yrs, 9st 121b ... 0 N. M'Kay's Antoinette, aged, 9st 61b 0 Zohrab was backed against the field even for the race. B«gnum, looking the worse for the previous day's racing, was not so much in fafor. All four got a good start, but Zohrab sprangoff with the lead and kept it throughout, Bendigo following pluckily at his heels. Regnum and Antoinette kept company all the way and after the first spnrt did not attempt to

catch Zorhab. A.11 had declared over weight.

HACK RACE. S-weepstates, of 10s. each, added to L10 from the Funds. One mile and a-half. Catch weights. For all horses that hive not been entered for any advertised race during the meeting (Hack races excepted). There were nine entries for this event, including Fossickor, Gazelle, Billy, Tommy, Maggie, Bendigo, Felo-de-se, Patchwork and another. Bendigo and Billy were the favorites, but Fossicker after a good 1 ace, came up to the winning post a couple of lengths in advance of the latter. A protest (which was allowed) was entered against Fossicker, that horse having run for an advertised race other than a hack race during the meeting. This concluded the sports. A match was arranged to come off in a month on the course between Mr Brown's ch. Bendigo, and Mr Waddell's " Jim o' the Needle " for L30 each, carrying 10 st.
