STEWARDS' DINNER.

The race dinner was served up in the Star and Garter Hotel on Friday evening, and about fifty gentlemen sat down to an excellent spread, prepared in host Payne's usual first-class style. The Judge, M. S. Gleeson Esq., M.P.C., occupied the chair, and the clerk of the course, H. A. Julius Esq , the vice-chair. In addition to the usual loyal toasts, the following were also given, viz : —"The Oamaru Kaees," proposed by R. Campbell Jr., Esq., and responded to from the vice-chair ; " The Winners " by the vice-chair, and responded to by Mr Edward Guinness ; " the Stewards " by E. W. Roxby Esq.. responded to by Edward Gibson Esq., ; also the Judge, Clerk of the Course, &c. " The Visitors " was proposed by Mr Shrimski and responded to by Mr Maddock. During the evening, Mrs Payne, the respected hostess of the " Star and Garter" was called in to present the " Oamaru Cup " to the winner, Mr Neil MKay. This she did in a very graceful manner, at the same time expressing in a few well-chosen and appropriate words the gratification it gave her, which was enhanced from the fact that the competition for the valuable prize had been "open to all." The winner briefly returned thanks.
