MANGONUI NEWS
Wild Pigeons Feed on Loquats Growing around the Mangonui Harbour there are numbers of loquat trees, probably self-sown. This year they have fruited heavily and the native pigeons up in the ranges have evidently found them palatable. Cn Mr. Marchant’s property there is a large specimen which bore a heavy crop, and it was a common sight to see the pigeons feeding on it. This time of the year the native bush provides little or no berries and the pigeons feed on leaves, so the* the loquat provides a good berry food in a lean perjod. Mangonui Regatta A meeting of the Regatta Committee was held in the Hall on Saturday last, the 9th November, Mr. J. Browne presiding. A programme was drawn out for the Regatta to be held on New Year’s Day. Several novelty events were included in what should prove to be an interesting programme. A swimming race is to be staged from across the harbour. On shore there is to be a tug-of-war competition, and a slow bicycle race. A dinghy tug-of-war should provide some excitement. The tide is favourable for •* events, high water being just after midday.
