Whangaroa County Council Affairs.

Closing of Kukuparare Road Land Department Raises no Objection The following members were present at the August meeting of the Whangaroa County Council held on Monday at Kaeo : Crs. H. R. Leslie (chairman), J. W. Hayes, T. H. Hayes, E. F. Connolly, E. B. Weber, C. Martin, E. R. Shepherd and the engineer, Mr. H. Chappell. Replying to the Council regarding the closing of Kukuparare road, Mr. W. D. Armit, Commissioner of Crown Lands, stated that after having received a report from a field inspector on this matter, the Department of Lands raised no objection to the closing of the road. Advice that the accounts of the Ranfurly Bay Scenic Reserve should in future be incorporated in the accounts of the Council was received from the Audit Inspector. The letter explained that it appeared the Council had not been appointed a Board to control the scenic reserve in compliance with the Scenery Preservation Act. The Council agreed to co-operate with the New Zealand Farmers’ Union by appointing a representative to attend the meeting to be held in • Auckland on August 12 regarding transport matters. The selection of a representative was left to the chairman. Resulting from Mr. G. A. Shepherd’s presence at the meeting, the Council decided to expend up to £ls on the formation of an access road to his property. The question of approving of a land transfer for Mr. George Andrew Johanson was left to the engineer to finalise. Rebate on Rates The general rate of 74d in the £, struck at last meeting, was confirmed. A rebate of five percent is to be allowed for prompt payment. All rates are due on September 1. No action was taken in regard to a request from Mr. J. C. Boyers for an access road to his property at Otangaroa. It was agreed to inform Mr. Boyers that the matter was one for the Public Works department and not for the Council to deal with. Messrs. Leslie Bros., Kaeo, asked that the access to their property be metalled. It was stated £73 had been' paid in rates. The matter was deferred until the next meeting for consideration. Mr. D. B. Smythe, Kaeo, was granted a renewal of his billiardroom license for a further six months, subject to the approval of the Health department. Authority was given the engineer to have attention given to the cemetery. The financial position, as submitted by the treasurer, showed the debit balance as on August 8 was £llß6. This was considered satisfactory in view of the fact that £3OO was • paid to the Public Works department. WHANGAROA HOSPITAL BOARD Financial Report The report presented by the treasurer, Mr. H. Chappell, at Monday’s meeting of the Whangaroa Hospital Board, showed the debit balance on August 8 was £372. Receipts included patients’ fees £193, levies £233, subsidies £524.
