Hokianga County Council Affairs.

Usual Monthly Meeting Five Percent Rebate on Rates The August meeting of the Hokianga County -Council was held at Rawene on Tuesday, when the following members were present : Crs. A. C. Yarborough (chairman), M. Mulcahy, R. Petherbridge, W. Searle, O. 0. Perry, W. Austin, R. Irvine and the engineer, Mr. L. S. Donnelley. The clerk, Mr. R. Railley, was absent owing to illness. Crs. W. H. White and W. Freese were also absent. A decision was made to allow a rebate of five percent on all current year’s rates paid within thirty days from date of issue of the rate deimands. The sanitary inspector, Mr. L. W. i Reid, stated that during July four

halls had been inspected and found satisfactory. Ten food premises were inspected, mostly in connection with the renewal of poison licenses. Although these renewals were somewhat overdue, all applications were now made. A defective septic tank in the township had been given attention. Application was made by the Disabled Soldiers’ Products, Dunedin, for the opportunity to quote for the making of dog collars. The Council agreed to place its order again with this firm, providing the price was satisfactory. With reference to the application from Mr. T. C. Carswell, Utakura, for a foot swing-bridge across the Utakura stream in order that he can get his cream to the road, Cr. Austin was requested to investigate the matter. The congestion of traffic at the Umawera hall during the conducting of "entertainments was brought before the Council’s notice by Cr. O. O. Pei'ry. A decision was made to empower the Umawera Settlers’ Association to instruct motorists to park their cars in suitable positions so as to leave room for the passing of other traffic. Similar notices are to be forwarded to the Kohukohu Football Club and Broadwood Show Association.
