Transport License Cases
At its sitting in Whangarei last week, the No. 1 Transport Licensing Authority gave its decision on applications for licenses heard in the North at its sittings last month. J. D. Ryan applied for a continuous passenger service license for the Kaitaia-Mangonui route. The authority was of the opinion that the service was principally a goods service, and it decided to deal with the application accordingly. A continuous goods service license was granted to operate one vehicle over the route for the carriage of mails and parcels. Passengers not exceeding two are permitted to be carried for reward. An application for a goods service license by R. E. Walker for the Mangonui-Ohaeawai route, via Kaeo and Kerikeri, was granted. The authority considered that at 3.45 d a mile the service could not be run except at a loss unless the other freight amounted to a substantial proportion of the loads carried. Having regard to that particular run, and also to the state of the roads, it was considered that a minimum return of 6d a mile was required to cover actual running costs, including driver’s wages. The application of R. Dysart for a passenger license for the HerekinoKaitaia route was granted. An application for a goods service license was granted to W. H. Evans in the Houhora, Awanui and Kaitaia ridings of the Mangonui County for
the carting of all classes of goods. The application for permission to carry passengers was not in order and a fresh application was required.
