NORTHERN HOKIANGA

Personal Mr. and Mrs. Walter Witana, of Orira, are the proud possessors of a new boy, born last Tuesday. Mr. and Mrs. John Craig returned from their honeymoon last week. Their residence, which is being built near the Wairere road, is progressing famously.

Mr. and Mrs. Harold Wadham and Mr. and Mrs. Alf Ogle motored to Auckland last Thursday for a holiday visit. They will be the guests of Mr. Wadham’s parents. Two popular ladies of Kohukohu, Mrs. Tom Chapman and Mrs. Charlie Stancliffe, who are both patients in the Rawene hospital, are reported as progressing favourably.

Mrs. McLeod was at the Rawene hospital on Wednesday visiting her husband, who is progressing favourably though it is doubtful if he will 'be able to return home for some time. Mudflat Reclamation The Hokianga County Council is suggesting to the Public Works Department that a 200-acre mudflat adjoining Kohukohu on the north end be reclaimed. It is confidently believed that the Public Works Department will view the proposition favourably. West Coast Road The new west coast road to Mitimiti is becoming increasingly popular as a weekend route. Cream Collection The fall in cream output owing to the continued drought has resulted in the cream collection being made every third day instead of on alternate days. Vaughan Settlement Block The Vaughan block is another step advanced. The considerable area of teatree and fern cut during the summer was burned over last week ready for seeding to grass. The allocation of the small farm areas has not yet been made. Popular Schoolteacher Transferred The transfer of Mr. Joll, headteacher of Te Huahua school, to Invercargill, is the cause of great regret to the district. Mr. Joll’s work is of outstanding character and he will leave a school where his influence will remain for some time. Mangamuka Settlers’ Association The Mangamuka Settlers’ Association held its annual meeting at Tutekehua last week. For the coming year Mr. J. E. Tulloch was elected president, Messrs. M. Mulcahy and M. Crallan vice-presidents, Mr. C. M. Robertson secretary, Mr. George Neil treasurer, and Mr. A. E. Looker auditor. Mr. C. M. Robertson was also chosen as representative of the Association on the Hokianga Chamber of Commerce. Monetary Reform Mr. Rushworth, M.P., has been asked to address the settlers of Omahuta on monetary reform. Travelling on Cream Lorries The settlers on the cream routes are feeling the restriction imposed on cream lorries by the Transport Board. There is a sincere wish that some modification of the existing regulation will be made to enable settlers without means of conveyance to make use of the regular trips of the cream lorries for travelling to and from Kohukohu. Food for the Timber Mill The stretch of water immediately below the Mangamuka bridge is a sight worth seeing at present. Hun-

dreds of logs are massed there awaiting rafting to the Kohukohu mill. Question of Harbour Dues The change of method in collecting harbour dues is causing difficulties between the Hokianga Harbour Board and the Hokianga Dairy Company. Previously the dues took the form of wharfage charges which brought revenue from public wharves only. Since April 1 the dues have been collected on outward and inward tonnage and are necessarily a charge on all seaborne freight whether landed over public or private wharves. The issue between the two bodies is whether the Dairy Company wharf should receive assistance from the dues collected or whether the whole amount collected should go to the servicing and upkeep of the public wharves. The directors of the Dairy Company were received by the Harbour Board at its last meeting as a deputation on the question, but results were inconclusive. The Dairy Company holds that it will receive no benefits from the considerable annual amount it will have to pay. The Harbour Board does not agree with this view. Car Collision Two cars travelling on the Kohu-kohu-Tutekehua road collided last week at a sharp bend and both were damaged. The driver of one was Mr. Reg. Hawkins, while Mr. Colin Templeton was driving the other. Fortunately no one was injured, both cars slackening in time to prevent a serious impact.
