Mangonui v Bay of Islands Junior Rep. Match. The, match tor the Penney Cup was played at Awanui under ideal conditions last Saturday. A fair crowd was in attendance a good display of hard clean football being witnessed. Mr A McKenzie controlled the game in a most efficient manner, and it is to be hoped that his penalties against the over-keen Mangonui forwards will be taken to heart so that they do not lose the match against Kaipara through such infringements. Mangonui came out victors by 13-3. For Mangonui W Cooper potted a good goal. Bowman, F Cooper and G Hutley a try each. For the Bay Williams put a good penalty kick over at the call ot time. Although the game was a hard one Mangonui should have won by a bigger margin as their backs were continuously attacking and combining well whilst many points were given away by the forwards through getting offside at a critical moment. Mangonui have great material in their team but necessary alterations will make a marked difference. F Evans at %back tor Mangonui opened up the game in a remarkable manner yet no scores resulted though some pretty passing bouts took place’. The Mangonui players will benefit by this try-out before going for the Brake Shield, as a slight change here and there and the drubbing Mr McKenzie gave them will make, the team much mote effective. The home union entertained the visitors at tea in the evening, l’he president Mr Fleming, welcomed the team and their managers Messrs Dunlop and Patience who incidentally are presidnt and secretary respectively of the Bay Union. Mr Dunlop in responding praised the toheroa soup, handed out some good advice, and extended an invitation to return the trip next season, when they would assuredly reciprocate all the good things done for them this time, incidentally—the licking.
