THE MOTUTANGI SWAMP

When the Hon. K. S. Williams was at Waiharara recently a deputation requested that preference should be given to returned soldiers in the ballot for the Motutangi Swamp sections. The Minister of Lands now replies as follows to Colonel Allen Bell, M.P.

“I have to inform you that the Commissioner of Crown Lands North Auckland, does not consider that special preference to returned soldiers should be given us he does not think the quality of the land would justify this being done. Moreover, if the sections were allotted to discharged soldiers in this manner, it would no doubt lead to the impression that the Department would make the usual advances for effecting improvements, whereas it is not the intention of the Department to make advances on these sections, under the provisions of the Discharged Soldiers Settlement Act.”
