COLONEL ALLEN BELL.
Sir, —Whilst it may seem to be a small matter, yet in the past it has been made a big one that Colonel Allen Bell, M.P., member for the Bay of Islands electorate, is always designed “Mr.” by Auckland newspapers. The war services of Lieutenant-Colonel Allen Bell, as shown in the Army List, 1910, recount distinguished service in the Matabeie War, 1896 (British South Africa Company’s medal), and South African War, 1899-1900 (Queen’s medal, with two clasps). Later he was commanding officer Fourth Regiment, Auckland Mounted Rifles, General Sir Alexander Godley, General Sir Herbert Plumer, Earl Roberts, as well as all his colleagues in Parliament, address Allen Bell as colonel, and I for one would be glad to see The Sun lead the way in abandoning the peevish and discourteous attitude heretofore adopted by the Auckland newspapers. We of the North recognise in Colonel Bell one who has given the best of his life to the service ot the Empire, both in the field and in the organising the citizen army of this Dominion. Throughout his electorate he is known as Colonel Bell, and we would appreciate a similar politeness on the part of your (here’s all the jam you’ll get with this pill!) extremely clever paper. Margaret Macpherson. Kaitaia, April 5, 1927.
