THE RUBAIYAT OF THE CHASE.
Perchance, before next meeting it may hap That some of us shall feel the Shackles snap; So let us keep the Maxim still in Mind: Man is the Mouse, and Woman is the trap. The Man no question makes of Ayes or Noes, But here and there as hunts the woman goes; But she who hunts him all about the Field, She knows the game all through—She knows —She knows. And some we loved, the blythest and the best That jovial Bachelordom has e’er possessed, Have met their Fate a round 01 two before; And now sit tight at home, demure, - depressed. Some for the glories of tree Life, and Some Sigh for matrimonial Heav’n yet to come, Ah, take the Substance ! let the Shadow go! Nor heed Enchantress, be she gay or glum. The Wedding Finger becks, and once the Ring Is round enclasped, how vain it were to bring Before vour Eyes the scenes of Toys long passed; Thou’rt caught and cooped—A Chattel and a Thing.
