G Armstrong, Whitworth and Co., £461,051 19 11, for construction of nineteen miles of the Kati Kati-Aongatete, Agata, and Te Puna section of the East Coast Main Trunk Railway. Other tenders received wereF. S. Gteenshields, £498,397 ; J. and A. Anderson, £521,020 5/-; E. Hunt and Co. (no schedule), £687,858. The estimate of the Public Works Department was £505,037 17/6. “The successful tenderer,” stated the Minister, “is, of course, a British firm. Mr F. S. Greenshields is a local man, who had the tender from the British Electrical Company for electrification of the Otira Tunnel. Messrs J. and A. Anderson belong to Christchurch, Mr C. H. Carson to Australia, and Messrs E. Hunt and Co. to Whangarei. While £461,056 is a large sum for construction of 19 miles of railway, the country is stated to be most dif-ficult-more difficult than anything on the Main Trunk line, with the exception ol the Spiral. “ The contract will provide work for about 400 men, and it is intended to make a start as early as practicable. Tauranga will be the headquarters of Messrs Armstrong, Whitworth’s works on account of the facilities for water transport to various poims along the work.”
