STOKE-WAKATU WOMEN’S INSTITUTE

The August meeting of the StokeWakatu W.I. was held in the Stoke Hall. Bad weather kept many members away. After repeating the aspiration the president, Mrs Vivian, welcomed members and visitors who included Mrs Wilkes, V. 0., from Richmond. Mrs Corby commented upon the motto, “carve the faults of your friends in sand, their virtues i n rock.” For the “golden thread” (here, there and everywhere) Mrs Burns read a most amusing story about New Zealand written by someone who had never seen it. The Dominion President’s letter in "Home and Country” was read by Mrs Vivian. The roll call, “A Joke” caused much amusement. A large number of clothes were handed in for UNRRA. Mrs Wilkes gave some very interesting demonstrations upon different ways of doing quilting and methods of using up small pieces of materials. She was accorded a very hearty vole of thanks and presented with a pretty shoulder spray. A guessing competition was won by Mrs Squire. slrs Fowle judged the monthly competitions which resulted: Best bloom Mrs Vivian 1 (yellow polyanthus)-, Mrs Chaytor 2 (pansy): plain scones, Mrs Chaytor 1, Mrs Vivian 2 The meeting closed with the singing of the National Anthem.
