TECHNICAL EVENING CLASSES

INCREASED ENROLMENTS A report presented by the supervisor of the Nelson College Evening Classes (Mr R. M. Webber) at last evening’s meeting of the Council of Governors showed an increase in the number of students enrolled as compared with the previous year. In 1944 there were 354 students enrolled in the evening classes (146 male and 208 female). Of this number there were 129 male and 117 female free students and 17 male and 91 female paying students. The increased roll for the current year totalled 391, comprising 180 male students and 211 female. There were 165 male and 129 female free students and 15 male and 82 female paying students. The figures given refer to the number of students. Each student usually attends several classes, so the class enrolments totalled 674 as against 610 for 1944. The supervisor attributed the increase in the inumber of male students mainly to the trade classes in carpentry, joinery and electrical wiring, together with a number of returned soldiers mostly taking cabinet-making.
