VAST ESTATE AT STAKE
WILL OF “ABDUL THE DAMNED’
London, Aug. 6 A lawsuit over the vast estate of the Ottoman ruler "Abdul the Damned,” will open shortly at Jaffa. "Abdul the Damned” was Sultan Abdul Hamid of Turkey, who was deposed in 1909 and died nine ye,ars later in prison in Asia Minor. During his reign he acquired estates in Greece. Macedonia. Syria, and Palestine and elsewhere and they lay in territories ceded by Turkey in 1924 under the Treaty of Lausanne. He was said to have 237 wives and an estate that was valued at £300.000.000. A claim was made in the court at Jaffa some years ago to establish the rights of the heirs and decision was given in favour of the heirs, but appeals eventually brought the case to the Privy Council, which directed that the action should go back to Jaffa for retrial. Two companies, the first in Palestine and the second in other territories, have been formed to support the heirs’ claims. They were registered in Canada and each has a capital of £1.500.000. of which half had been allocated by the heirs and the remainder of the capital had been supplied by businessmen who hope to benefit from the Court’s decision.
