FAREWELL SOCIAL
PRESENTATION TO TRANSPORT MANAGER When Mr and Mrs L. C. McKinnon were tendered a farewell social at Takaka orior to their leaving for Christchurch, there was a large gathering in the Masonic Hall. The evening was spent in dancing to the music of Mrs V. Page and Mr K. Reynish. Mr J. Vaughan acted as M.C. Miss P. Matthews sang a solo. At an 'nterval in the dancing. Mrs Bensemann presented Mrs MacKinnon with a spray from the ladies cf Takaka. Mr Bensemann. as chairman of the Town Board, of which Mr McKinnon had been a member, stated that as a citizen he had done more in the three ye-.rs he had lived in Takaka than most people did in 30 years. He had been most willing to help in any patrioticwork. As a bandsman, too. he would be missed Mr Bensemann wished him prosperity in his new sphere and asked him to accept a cheque from the Residents.
Mr A. H. Rose, chairman of the County Council, referred to the tactful manner in which Mr McKinnon had endeavoured to overcome transport difficulties to suit the farmers, and said all were sorry to lose him. Mr C. P. Reilly, chairman of the Takaka D.H.S , spoke of the keen interest Mi McKinnon had shown in everything for the welfare of the district' and in education. He had been a valued member of the school committee for three years and as a mark of appreciation lor all he had done. Mr Reilly presented him with a set of carvers.
Mr D. Hope, president of the Farmers Union, voiced the feelings of the farmers when he said they had never had better service in the district in regards to the removal of fat stock. Mr W. Birdsall, president of the bowling club, expressed the regret members felt at losing such a keen and helpful member. He congratulated Mr McKinnon on his promotion and wished him 'good bowling.” Mr Vaughan, president of the R.S.A., thanked Mr McKinnon for the interest he had taken in returned men and hoped he would continue to assist them in Christchurch.
Mr H. McKenna, on behalf of the employees of Transport, Ltd., thanked the guest for his personal interest .in the men and wished Mr McKinnon good luck and presented him with a bowler's bag. Mr B. F. Falconer, for the Golden Bay Shipping Co. and J. C. Hutton and Co. and Mr J. Willox. on behalf of visiting drivers, and Mr R. M. Kirk, for the business firms, added their good wishes. On rising to reply Mr McKinnon was accorded musical honours. 4ie said it was with regret that he was leaving Takaka. where his happy relations with his men and the people had made his stay pleasant. Anything he had done he felt it was his duty to do as a citizen. For his wife and himself he thanked the donors for their gifts and kind remarks.
