APPLEBY W.D.F.U.

The April meeting of the Appleby branch of the W.D.F.U. was held recently and was enjoyed by all. Owing to seasonal work several members were unable to be present. The roll call “book or magazine for a soldier’s parcel” was well answered. The sympathy of all members was extended to Mr and Mrs A. W. Tanner and family, of Richmond, on the recent motor accident. Miss Tanner had endeared herself to the children of Appleby and the parents greatly appreciated all that she had done. The whole district mourned the loss of so capable and sympathetic a teacher in such tragic circumstances. During the afternoon an entertaining and instructive talk wa s given by Mrs Pond who has travelled extensively. She spoke chiefly of her pre-war tour of Italy and members were most interested to hear her describe places where our soldiers are fighting so gallantly at present. Everyone hoped to have the pleasure of hearing her speak again in the near future. There was a record number of entries for the competitions, the judging of which resulted as follows:—Cut bloom. Mrs R. O’Connor, Mrs Kerr, Mrs Rogers; 4 cut blooms. Mrs Kerr, Mrs Robinson, Mrs Shirtliff; ladies’ buttonhole, Mrs Rogers, Mrs Shirtliff, Mrs Kerr: 6 onions, Mrs Rogers, Mrs Tear, Mrs Russ; sponge sandwich, Mrs Wells, Mrs R. O’Connor. Members were reminded that it will be their turn to provide the hamper for the Fighting Services' Club on 28th April. The singing of the National Anthem brought the meeting to a close.
