FINES TOTAL £520

CHARGES UNDER DISTILLATION ACT Timaru, March 9. Fines totalling £520 were imposed by Mr H. Morgan, S.M., on Matthew Glucina. Yugoslav fish merchant, aged 42. of Waimate, in the Timaru Magistrate's Court, on charges laid under the Distillation Act. He was fined £250 on a charge of being concerned in the unlawful making of spirits and a further £250 on a charge that spirits on which full duty had not been paid were found on his premises. On a charge of attempting suicide Glucina was placed on probation for two years cm condition that he paid the medical expenses within one month. For having bottles in his possession with the labels not destroyed, he was fined £2O, while for keeping intoxicating liquor for sale, being an unlicensed person, he was convicted but no penalty was imposed.
