ASSEMBLY CENTRES IN’ FAE EAST ADVICE FROM RED CROSS i Wellington, This Day. the Prisoners of War Inquiry OfIfice reports that cable advice from , the International Red Cross states that persons detained in civil as- ; sembly centres in the Far East are : not considered by the Japanese authonties as civilian internees and t^. re / ore the Red Cross service can sthJ be used for communication with tnem. Civil assembly centres appear to be districts or definite groups of buildings in which Allied nationals are compelled to reside, though under conditions which are less restricted than those of civilian internment camps. To date it is known that such centres are established round Shanghai, at Pootung, Haipong Road, Lungwta, Yangchow. Yuyuen Road and the Great Western Road, i here also are two other centres further north in China at Chefoo and Weihain. Camps at Stanley (Hong Sfhut , and . Rangi (Singapore) are definitely civilian internment camps ana not assembly centres.—P.A.
