NEW COLLEGE BUILDING

From 1923 till the Jubilee year of 1933 was a decade of many changes and reconstructions. In 1923 the first woman was appointed to the Council of Governors. Mrs Tillyard being so honoured. The purchase in 1924 of the playing field in Waimea road expanded the scope of the sports activities of the College. The school itself was growing fast and could not accommodate the increasing numbers. Further expansion was necessary and in August, 1930, the foundation stone of a new College was laid and the erection of a block of the new building was started. In March of the next year the block was completed and the building was occupied The following year brought further der velopments when Nelson College was gazetted as a Combined school and was amalgamated with the Technical School to provide courses of both academic and practical technical training.
