JUBILEE YEAR

The end of this decade brought the Jubilee year of the College. At Easter of 1933, the blue gum tree, now a gnarled old giant, stretched welcoming arms to the 700 pupils of the pa.-,t who. grown older, too. had come from far and near to be present at the fiftieth birthday of their College. As their Jubilee gift to the school the old girls presented the fine stone gateway and the gates with the school crests making a dignified entrance to the College and an effective setting for their friend the blue gum tree. The last ten years of the College’s history, brought once more the shadow of war. but still the school was going ahead and expanding. The sporting facilities of the College were expanded bv the building of the new swimming baths, which were named after Miss K M. Edger (Mrs Evans), the first Principal. Gibson House, adjoining the College, was acquired for an art studio and cookery rooms, and was named after Miss B E Gibson (Mrs Talbot), the second Principal, who held that office from 1890 to 1900. The other four Principals of the College .were Miss A. C. Tendall (1900 to 1905). Miss M. Lorimer (1906 to 1926), Miss C. B. Mills (1927-1931) and the present Principal. Miss J Stewart, who has held the position since 1932. Guided by these six energetic ana devoted leaders, has fulfilled the ideal laid down in the Nelson College Act, of 1853. which provided for the establishment of “an educational institution for the advancement of religion and morality and the promotion of useful knowledge by of fering to the youth of the Province general education of a superior character " The six trees to be planted to-morrow should provide a living and flourishing memorial to the life and work of Nelson College for girls throughout the years.
