FOUR MEN CHARGED
WITH PUBLISHING SUBVERSIVE STATEMENT [United Press Association] AUCKLAND. This Day. Charged with publishing a subversive statement in Auckland yesterday, four men were arrested last night and appeared in the Police Court to-day. They were Phillip Leslie Hardcastle (32). carpenter; Herbert Henry Swann (31), carpenter; Henry Joseph Hurman (39). carpenter, and Alec Silverman (27). cabinetmaker. The charge sheet stated that all were born in England. Detective-Sergeant Walsh said that these men pasted stickers on telegraph poles and other places advising that no more troops should go overseas. Other alleged subversive literature was also found in their possession. He asked for a remand to 16th December. The Magistrate, Mr Morling. granted a remand and allowed bail each in his own recognisance of £IOO, or equivalent sureties.
