TOBACCO FACTORY WORKERS
CONDITIONS OF RESUMPTION [United Press Association] WELLINGTON, This Day. The conditions on which work was recommenced at the Petone factory of W.D. and H.O. Wills (New Zealand), Ltd., on Friday were announced on Saturday. Only 26 workers out of approximately 300 at a meeting voted against the motion to return to work. As the result of the meetings between representatives of the Wellington Tobacco Workers’ Union and the Wellington Trades Council with representatives of the employers, and between representatives of the workers and the Minister of Labour, Mr Webb, it was decided that work should be resumed on the following basis:—
1. That the status quo respecting wages and conditions should be observed.
2. That an independent tribunal under the Emergency Regulations presided over by Mr J. A. Gilmour, S.M., should sit immediately. 3. That the tribunal would have the right to say whether the employee concerned was wrongly dismissed.
4. Both sides agreeing to abide by the law.
The tribunal has been constituted, and is at present sitting under the chairmanship of Mr Gilmour, S.M.
