TOWNSWOMEN’S GUILD

NELSON WEST BRANCH MEETING FIRST AID CLASSES ARRANGED The monthly meeting of the Nelson West Townswomen's Guild was held in the Oddfellows’ Hall. After the singing of the Guild’s “Ode,” and the reading of the Aspiration, Mrs Gustavel (president) extended a welcome to all present. The business part of the meeting was then discussed, and it was arranged to hold a “bring and buy” stall, the proceeds of which were to be donated to the Chinese Refugee Children’s Fund. First aid classes were also arranged, commencing on the 15th June. Mrs Lindsay-Ross has kindly consented to instruct these classes. During the afternoon Colonel Brereton gave a very interesting talk on “Home Defence” in case of emergency, with illustrations. Afternoon tea followed, and was handed round by the following hostesses: Mesdames Goodman, Heath Sharland, Harley, Condell, O’Donnell and Thomas. The Musical Circle sang “In a Little Old Garden,” and a trio, “Kentucky Babe,” was sung by Mesdames Gustavel, Hastie and Stewart. The National Anthem brought a pleasant afternoon tc a close. CIRCLE NOTES During the month the various circles held their annual meetings which were partly social afternoons. At the Musical Circle Mrs Heather was elected convener; and Mrs Hastie gave a humorous recitation. This is a very enthusiastic circle. At their second meeting selections from comic opera, glees and trios were practised.

The Play Reading Circle now has Mrs Hastie as convener). A hearty vote of thanks was tendered Mrs Shale (last year’s convener) who did not seek reelection. A very amusing play, “Aunt Deborah,” was read. Mrs Hastie is arranging for this play to be produced in costume at a monthly guild meeting later in the year. Two more have been read and four new members admitted to this circle. The Bridge Circle continues its weekly meetings with Mrs Temple as convener. Members are becoming very enthusiastic. The Handicraft Circle with Mrs Conibear (re-elected) convener still continues its good work of instructing in various hand crafts and first aid classes are to be held in conjunction with the evening classes which are held in the Cathedral Assembly Hall fortnightly. Members are permitted to bring their friends along with them to these classes. During the month members of the Flayreading and Musical Circles visited the Stoke-Wakatu W.I. birthday party; and produced the programme “Cabaret Varieties,” under the leadership of Mrs Stewart, who was presented with a beautiful bouquet by Mrs Corby, president of the Stoke-Wakatu W.I.
