EMERGENCY DEFENCE PUNS

CONSIDERED ENTIRELY ADEQUATE MINISTER’S ASSURANCES [United Press Association] CHRISTCHURCH, 9th May. The plans which the Government haa made to meet any emergency arising out of warfare against New Zealand are considered by the Minister of Defence, Mr Jones, to be entirely adequate. The Minister stated this view in a letter received by the Christchurch City Council, in reply to representations made by the council following a discussion in committee at the last meeting. The Minister wrote;—

“I have to inform you that the emergency organisation is intended to deal not only with major disasters arising from civil or natural causes, but also those arising from a condition of warfare. The plans which the Government

have made are considered to be entirely adequate in view of the scale of hostile attack which can be expected.”
