NELSON’S FRUIT EXPORT
TOTAL FOR 1939 SEASON ABOUT 700,000 CASES ANTICIPATED PRODUCTION BETTER THAN EARLY ESTIMATES INDICATED It is anticipated that the total export of apples and pears from the Nelson district for the 1939 season will reach 700,000 cases. Early in the season, on account of the prolonged drought conditions, the prospects were for a considerable decrease in the fruit crop, the estimates indicating that the figure would be near to that in the poor productive season of 1935. However a total of 700,00 cases is regarded as normal for the biennial off season folowing last year’s large > export of 978,421 cases | ] Mr R. T. Carlyon, shipping super- ! visor for export fruit, stated to-day that the total up to last Friday waa , 666.650 cases, and that it was probable | that about 700.000 cases would be received by the end of the season. About ; 12,000 cases were received for inspec- : tion yesterday. The figures for the j three areas up to last Friday were j respectively—Nelson, 183,447; Mapua, 1 239,526; Motueka, 243,677 cases. The ' inspection sheds will be open only oil ! odd days from now until the prospecI live closing day for the latest variety. ' Dougherty, on the 22nd May.
