PHYSICAL FITNESS CARNIVAL
A SNAPPY FINALE ITo The Editor 1 Sir, —As a resident of this city for the past 27 years I feel it my duty to express my pleasure at being present at the Trafalgar Park on Saturday evening last to witness a wonderful display of youthful activity. To say the least, it was to my mind, and I have experienced similar shows in other places, the best programme arranged through local talent, of its kind, that has ever been achieved in Nelson. The officials and competitors are to be congratulated on the successful termination of their arduous work. Of course, the College girls and boys excelled in their share of the entertainment, as they always do, no matter where or when they perform their drill; the Boy Scouts, Sea Scouts, Girl Guides and all the other schools boys and girls acquitted themselves excellently and 1 feel sure that parents must have been enthused at their performances. Thanks are also due to the three participating bands who were most generous with their music. What surprised me most was the excellent showing by the girls representing various shops in Nelson; their marching and precision was a treat to watch and to think that they had only had a few weeks’ prior training. It is a pity that more of our boys did not put themselves out to emulate what our girls showed them could be done in so short a time. When another such a performance is contemplated I would strongly advise our athletic boys to see to it that they are fully represented. Don’t be an independent and just “sit on the fence.” Our Empire needs you so why not do your bit and show us how fit you are. Where were the teams from such as cricketers, tennis players, footballers, hockey players, basketball players, swimmers, scullers. yachtsmen, etc? After witnessing the enthusiasm displayed on Saturday I only hope that more of these shows may be produced during the year, and if there is any shortage of committee men I would be pleased to do my bit on a future occasion, and, may be, arrange a team of, say, tennis players. It must have been most encouraging to both officials and competitors to see such a large and enthusiastic audience turn out for the finale. In conclusion I would like to commend the carnival committee for making the prices of admission only 6d and 3d. This low charge made it possible for such a large attendance although the entertainment was worth considerably more. Do it again and again .Nelson. —I am etc. FRANK. Nelson, 26th February.
