THE MISCHIEVOUS PUKEKO

A FARMER'S OBSERVATIONS iFroin Our Own Correspondent! From time to time reports have been received that pukekos are in the habit of killing newly-hatched ducks, report* that usually receive a prompt denial from some other source. However, a resident of the Waimeas recently saw a pukeko stalking away from his poultry yard with a domestic duckling dangling from his bill. Following the bird the farmer discovered that the duck was taken to the pukeko's nest where the remains of several other ducks were discovered. A few days later matters reached a further stage when a newly hatched gosling was seen to meet a similar fate. Pukekos are very plentiful in parts of the Waimeas, and though very beautiful to the eyfe they are capable of doing considerable damage to crop* and apparently young poultry.
