FRUIT FOR SCHOOLS

SUGGESTION BY COMMITTEE’S ASSOCIATION “In view of the fact that large quantities of fruit are wasted every season and that fruitgrower* are in need of leady markets for their produce, we ask the Government to take steps to have a scheme inauguarted for the issue of suitable fruit to schools nol in the milk-in-schools scheme, particularly in the rural areas.” This was a remit passed at the quarterly meeting of the Manawatu and Oroua School Committees’ Association. It was pointed out that in the country districts there Was an abundance of milk, so that the need for the daily ration at school was not so great as at the city schools, but there was a need for fruit. Inquiries made at the Ohakea School revealed that less than 2 per cent, of the pupils took fruit to school with their lunches. It seemed that most of them only sow fruit when they visited town.
