AT EARLS COURT
OPTIMISM AT MOTOR SHOW Iby Air Mail—Own Correspondent.] LONDON. 20th October. Amongst the crowd at the Motor Show, who followed the Duke of Kent m his strenuous round of the principal stalls, was an elderly gentleman of striking personality but modest demeanour. It was Lord Nuffield. An alert policeman recognised the philanthropist who sports with multi-millions, and offered to make way for him to join the royal party. But Oxford's benefactor shook his head decidedly, and was content to elbow his way with the crowd. There was a big crush for the opening of the Show, the exhibits at which are estimated to represent about £500,000 and the general attitude was one of cheery optimism. It was whispered around, in proof that it is now to be “business as usual'' once more after the abrupt setback of the Czech crisis, that two big manufacturing concerns alone have contracted for business amounting to £26.000.000. The melange of sleek spick-and-span cars was bewildering to non-experts, but a motoring friend tells me the interesting features include economy in fuel consumption. less severe stream-lining, and actually air-conditioning!
