VISITING SEAMEN IN TROUBLE

FINES OF £5 FOR CONVERSION OF CAR Two seamen off the steamer Mahana, Henry Chaplin and Frederick Charles Dwyer, were jointly charged before Mr T. E. Maunsell, S.M., at the Magistrate’s Court this morning with unlawfully converting to their use. a car, the property of Mrs Margaret M. Campbell. Senior-Sergeant C. Petersen conducted the case for the police. The Senior-Sergeant stated that yesterday afternoon the defendants were found in complainant’s car, which was parked in Trafalgar street. Dwyer was sitting behind the wheel and Chaplin was beside him. The ignition key had been turned on and removed and they were endeavouring to start the car when the owner arrived. The owner asked the men what they were doing and Chaplin said they could not get it to go. When the men were ordered out of the vehicle the key was found to be missing. Both men were in a state of intoxication and if they had sueceeded in starting the car there might have been a serious accident and so the Sergeant asked for a substantial penalty.
