The Deputy-Mayor pointed out that | Mr Page was in Wellington to-day on public business and had intended to return by air. CORRESPONDENCE The St. John Ambulance Association I applied for permission to hold a street ; day collection on the 4th February. The j j request was granted. i Mr W. Lamb applied for permission ; j to erect a calico sign on the hoarding J in front of Hotel Nelson. The request was granted at the pleasure of the Council. The Churchwarden. Parish of Christ Church, advised that the vestry had accepted the other made by the Council for the maintenance of the Cathedral grounds. Mr W. Crowe asked that special hours for watering be allotted on Saturdays and Sundays to residents of the j j high levels. The Works Committee was given power t ) act. Mr F. H. Sharland suggested that the name of Cleveland Terrace be allotted to tlie street laid out by him off Nile street. The matter was deferred until the New Year. Mr F. H. Sharland suggested that . the bathing sheds near the Nile street bridge be made available for use. It was decided that the position be enquired into. „ The Automobile Association (Nclsonl ■ wrote suggesting that the ends of blind street such as Maori road, Eeklington Terrace and Endeavour street, be declared “no parking” areas and notices f erected accordingly and advising that a caution notice was being erected on the eastern side of Normanby Bridge. Messrs Vickerman and Lancaster enquired whether the Council proposed i to exercise its right to jnstal check i meters at tiic point of supply from the | Cobb scheme. Councillors Petti I. Harley and Glasgow. The Commiltee reported as follows: As to the lenders for the additions and alterations In the Gas Showroom building: That the lender of Messrs Chamberlain and Stannard has been accepted WORKS COMMITTEE At a meeting of the Works Committee held on 13th December, there were present: Councillor Russell (chairman), the Mayor. Councillors McArthur, Pettit and Harley. The Committee reported and recommended ns follows: — As to the letter from Mr J. S. Walter asking that the footpath in front of his private hotel be laid down in concrete blocks and offering to pay a proportion of the cost: That the writer be informed that the Council cannot see its way to comply with the request owing to the cost involved, but that the footpath will be lopdrcssed in due course As to the letter from residents of the south-eastern side of Mount street asking that the remainder of the street be tar-scaled and the footpath Lopdrcssed: That the writers be informed that the tar-scaling programme for this year will not permit of the inclusion of any other works and that their application must be deferred, but that in the meantime the watertables be re-formed and temporary repairs effected. As to application of Mr N. Chapman for permission to erect a motor garage in Emano street outside the building line imposed under Section 128 of the Public Works Act: That permission be granted subject to the approval of the Minister of Public Works. As to the application of Mr E. Councillor Russell, for the Committee, explained in connection with tiie Mount street request for tar scaling that the decision was on account of the fact that the Council would not have the finance or plant available to do it this year after footpath work had been completed. It was not because the Committee thought it should not be done. The report was adopted. CITY ENGINEER 'File City Engineer (Mr J. G. Littlejohn) reported for the fortnight ending Kith December as follows: Streets and Footways.—Topdressing of (lie footpaths in Milton and portions of Wcka and Cambria streets has been carried out. The general clean-up of the streets is in progress. Drainage.—There have been no interruptions in the drainage during the last, fortnight. Water.—The 8-inch main in Vanguard street has been extended up to Gloucester street and Messrs Kirkpatrick and Coy.’s Factory has now been changed over on to the low levels. The following works are being carried out under Scheme 13. full-time employment: Cambria street, repairs to sewers; Waimca street, repairs to sewers; Tahuna Sands Reserve; Haven road, quarry and reclamation. Motorists’ Camp, Sands Reserve.—The camp is now in occupation, t have arranged for the City rubbish service for tiie removal of refuse and for the Sanitary Inspector to make frequent inspections to sec that all sanitary appliances, etc., are properly attended to. A considerable amount of work is still required in connection with tiie access roads and cleaning up of the area. Arrangements have been made for a free removal of rubbish within flic Citi' on Monday next. ELECTRI Cl A L ENG IN EEK The Electrical Engineer (Mr E. Fleming) reported for tiie fortnight ending 16th December as follows: City applications, 3286 (increase 1) city extensions, 6871 (increase 10); total 1U.157 (increase 11). Heating load applied for 2006 k.w. (increase 2 k.w.) heating load applied for 5698 k.w. (increase 6 k.w.), power load applied foi 2409 k.w. (increase I k.w.); total, 10,111 k.w. (increase 9 k.w.). City peak load, day 530 k.w., night 770 k.w. Tiie underground 11,000 volt cable: have been laid t.o Halifax street. Within the next week tiie cables should be laid to Anzac Park sub-station. The linesmen arc erecting and binding in the overhead 11 k.v. cables alone the Railway Reserve. Construction ot this line will have to slop towards the end of the week for want of poles. Metropolitan Vickers Limited report that they iiope to have the transformer; and switchgear in Auckland on the 9tf February. This means that the plant will not be installed and ready for service until April. It will not be possible therefore, to overhaul the turbine unti the following spring, as Hie load on tin station will be increasing rapidly ii: April. Tiie reports were adopted. It was decided that the next meeting be held on tiie 13tli January. BYLAWS. TRAFFIC AND TRANSPORT COMMITTEE A meeting of the Bylaws. Traffic anc Transport Committee held on Thursday, 16th December, was attended b; Councillors Neale, Fitz-Gerald anc Harley. The Committee reported and recom mended as follows: — As to the letter from the Commis sioner of Transport suggesting that th Council consider the advisability of fix ing a scale of minimum taxi fares:1. —The following resolution passed a a meeting of the Council on the 30tl August, 1934, be rescinded: “That upoi the making of the proposed provision ii the bylaws, the present scale of fare: being out of date, be revised and tha maximum charge only be fixed.” 2. —That in pursuance of the provis ions of the Nelson City Bylaw No. 1 (1934) the Council fix and determin the following minimum charges tha may be made by way of fares for th use of vehicles licensed by the Counci for the carriage of passengers: — Scale of Minimum Fares. — (a) Fo one passenger. Is; (b) for two pas sengers. Is; (s) for three passenger: Is 6d; (d) for four or more passenger: 2s.
