COUNTY G'LEI!K CHARGED NEW YORK. 2nd December. Sensational allegations about the association oC the county clerk ot New York, A. J. Marineli, with criminals were made to-day by the District Attorney (Mr T. E. Dewey). An undertaking was given by Mr Dewey recently that he would purge city politics of the influence of Tammany Hall, and he was appointed a special prosecutor for this purpose. Mr Dewey has filed charges with the Governor of New York States (Mr Herbert F. Lehman), in which lie accuses Marinelli of being “associated politically with thieves, pickpockets, dope pedlars, and big-shot racketeers.” | Mr Lehman immediately ordered
Marinelli to answer the charges within live days. It was alleged by Mr Dewey that
Marinclli was closely associated with j "Lucky” Luciano, the notorious “vice j leader,” with whom he attended a ! convention in Chicago in 1932. Mr Dewey also named and gave the police records of eight wellknown underworld characters, who, he said, had frequently conferred ■ privately with Marinclli. He alleged I that Marinclli had employed Charles j Falci, a fugitive from justice, as j chauffeur four years, and that I
lie had appointed another convict as a city official at a salary of 5,000 dollars (£1,250).
