lIRITISH LARGER SCEPTICAL LONDON, 26tli November. Rumours are current in England that a general election may be bold next year, but the Labour party considers that a strong excuse would be needed for a poll. Speaking at Hath. Mr Herbert .Morrison. chairman of the Labour campaign committee, referred to “'the somewhat circumstantial rumours to the eltcct that certain members of the National Government and tacticians at the Conservative central office were seriously contemplating an carlv general election some time in 5938. even within the next few months.” Mr Morrison suggested to the Government that an excuse for an election would be needed, as the. verdict of the people showed that the country was behind it m its foreign and armament policies.

The last general election in Britain was held on 14tii November, 1935. when the National Government was returned with a majority of 247 over the Labour Opposition in a House of 615 members.
