TRAPPED IN ARCTIC
20 WOMEN AND CHILDREN MOSCOW, 6th December. Preparations are being made to rescue by planes 20 women and children, who are on board three Arctic ■ steamers which are ice-bound in a bay within 600 miles of the Pole. The ice-breaker Yermak failed to | penetrate the heavy icefields in an atI tempt to reach the vessels. M. Mazuruk, a pilot, who is at prei sent stationed in the polar regions | with a four-motor transport, will also : attempt to rescue the passengers in a fortnight, when the moon rises. The crews will spend the winter on board the ships.
MISSING AVIATORS
Plans are also being made to organise a last search for M. Lcvanivsky and his five companions, who disappeared three months ago while they were attempting to make a record non-stop flight from Moscow to the United States by way of the North Pole. It is expected that, when the polar moonlight arrives, two squadrons of planes, which arc stationed at Rudolf Island, will make a scries of flights. These will coincide with the new search which is being made by Sir Hubert Wilkins, the Australian explorer, in a plane which has been provided by the Russian Government. Sir Hubert Wilkins is now in Northern Canada, and is expected to begin his flight on 16lh December.
