WESTERN ACCESS

APPLICATION FOR SUBSIDY WAIMEA COUNTY COUNCIL TO PUBLIC WORKS DEPARTMENT RAISING WAIMEA WEST ROAD With a view to dealing with the frequent hooding of the road on the western side of the Appleby Bridge the Waimea County Engineer (Mr C. Traill) and the District Public Works Engineer (Mr T. A. Johnston) recently made an inspection of the locality and Mr Traill submitted the following proposals and recommendations to the monthly meeting of the Waimea County Council to-day:— (a) The raising of the level of that portion of the Waimea West road subject to flooding by Evcs’s Valley stream thus ensuring access to the western areas when the main highway is blocked at Appleby bridge. b) The erection of a temporary bridge of about 300 feet span over the lower portion of the western approach to the Appleby Bridge and filling the remainder of the approach. vc) The filling up of the western approach from Sat her ley’s stopbank to the bridge in a position suitable for the new bridge site, probably on. the downstream side of the present bridge, and the raising of the level of the existing stopbank on the south-west side of the main highway. In regard to (a) it is considered ih any case that this work should be proceeded with, provided a subsidy from the Public Works Fund is available, as giving premanent and immediate relief to the position.

It is not considered advisable to spend any money on the Wai-iti splash as at present hut provision should be made for a short span bridge next year.

In regard to (b): This is a temporary measure only, giving access during floods, but would be of little benefit to any future operations and is not recommended.

In regard to (c): This is considered the best method of dealing with the bridge and further investigations are being made to ascertain the amount of filling material and the height it would be necessary to raise the bank on the adjacent property to the south west to obviate the flooding of farm lands. RECOMMENDATION ADOPTED The Engineer to-day said that the proposal at the last meeting was to call tenders for raising the Waimea West road; the new scheme would bring the amount to £6OO from £3OO, and the Engineer said that he was of opinion that a subsidy could be obtained from the Public Works Department on this work. He suggested that the Council make a fresh application of £2 for £l, The Engineer’s recommendation was approved.
