THE WEATHER

SQUALLY AND CHANGEABLE The forecast is for squally and changeable weather with rain probable, being heavy in the western ranges, and thunder in places. Although a comparatively mild night followed a bleak day yesterday, and the sun shone at first this morning, the*weather changed for the worst when the barometer fell this morning to 29.74, and a blustering northeast wind arose. The day continued to be gloomy and threatening but no ram had fallen up till the early afternoon. The sunshine yesterday totalled 1 hour 50 minutes.

Strong northerly winds prevailed over the southern portion of the North Island and the South Island this morning, reaching gale force at Wellington and Greymouth. In all these districts, where pressure was low, the skies were mainly overcast, with showers in the far south. Auckland, however, had fine weather this morning.
