SUCCESSFUL MILITARY BALL

The annual ball, organised by the Motueka platoon of the Nelson, Marlborough and West Coast Regiment, held at the Institute Hall on Friday evening, attracted a large number of dancers not only from Motueka but from the surrounding districts, and, in consequence, proved a very successful function. Among those present were Major H. H. Thomason, Nelson, Lieutenant K. Hockey and several members of the Legion of Frontiersmen in uniform. For the occasion the hall was gaily decorated with blue and gold streamers, strings of coloured electric lights, trellis work and flags. Sergeant J. R. Talbot officiated as M.C. and Mr Harold Williams’s orchestra of five instruments, provided spirited music for the 250 dancers, who occupied the floor. Members of the Motueka platoon with the assistance of several ladies canied out the supper arrangements, and are to be complimented on the expeditious manner in which an excellent supper was served to the large assemblage. . Secretarial duties, in connection with the ball, were in the capable hands of Sergeant H. Dutton. Duiing an interval Lieutenant Hockey thanked all present for attending the ball and giving their loyal support, which was very much appreciated by the members of his platoon.

PRESENTATION TO' SERGEANT TALBOT Later in the evening members of the Motueka platoon met in the supper room to bid farewell to Sergeant J. R. Talbot, who has been appointed to the permanent stall of the Public Works’ Department and is on transfer to the East Coast. Lieutenant Hockey, in presenting Sergeant Talbot with a gold cigarette case as a tangible token of the esteem and regard in which he was held by the Motueka members, wished the recipient the best of luck and eveiy success in the future. Cheers were called for Sergeant Talbot, who suitably returned thanks.
