TENNISCLUB SEASON OPENED The Motueka Tennis Club’s courts were, officially opened for the season, on Saturday afternoon, by the president, the Rev. Canon G. A. Crossman, in the presence of a large attendance of members and friends. After extending a welcome to all, the president explained that the club this year had been forced, as a matter of policy, to relinquish the Manoy courts. It was thought, he said, that the club’s two courts would not be sufficient to meet requirements in view of an increased membership. On the club’s property there was space available, if the necessity arose, to lay down another two courts. The committee proposed to ascertain the cost of a new court, as it was considered that an additional one would provide adequate playing area in the meantime. Canon Crossman expressed pleasure at the fact that several young members had been elected to the committee, and that they were taking up their duties most enthusiastically. Besides a new court, the committee had in view the stripping off of the grass at both ends of the present courts and the asphalting of the whole area.

The president remarked that, during last year, there had been little competition for the challenge buttons, and he expressed the hope that more interest would be taken in this competition in the current season. He announced the following present holders of the Shaw Thompson buttons: — Men’s doubles, Mr Percy Craig and partner; ladies’ doubles, Mrs Craig and partner; and ITari Koa buttons, combined doubles, Mr and Mrs L. Drogemuller. Miss N. Crossman served the first ball, and the courts were declared open for the season. The excellent afternoon tea provided and dispensed by the ladies was thoroughly enjoyed, after which a number of friendly games were organised.

LADIES’ GOLF The draw for the medal round to be played on Wednesday next, 7th October, is as follows: Mrs Orr and Miss Everett; Mrs Smith and Mrs Thorp; Mrs Goodman and Miss Morrison; Miss Ross and Mrs Cameron; Mrs Minchin and Mrs Stilwell; Mrs Heath and Mrs Hamilton; Mrs Stratford and Miss Crossman; Mrs Craig and Mrs Everett; Miss Cooper and Miss Mackay; Mrs Taylor and scorer.
