ESCAPED PRISONER SURRENDERS

WALKS INTO AUCKLAND GAOL (By Telegraph—Press Association) AUCKLAND, This Day. John William Graves, aged 31 years, who escaped from the Waikune Prison Camp on Sunday afternoon, surrendered to the Auckland police station last night, and appeared this morning before Mr Hunt in the Magistrate’s Court, charged that being an incorrigible rogue lie escaped from a prison camp before the expiration of the term for which he was committed. Sub-Inspector Fox, asking for a remand to 10th October, said that Graves walked into the police station at 11.30.

Mr R. A. Singer, who appeared for Graves, said the latter had offered himself to the Auckland gaol last night, but was refused admission as the place was closed. Mr Hunt: “Wouldn’t he pay his board?” Sub-Inspector Fox said the police had no intimation that he had gone to prison. Mr Singer: “It shows his good intentions, anyway.” The remand was granted. NOT REFUSED ADMISSION AUCKLAND, This Day. When inquiry was made this afternoon it was denied officially that Graves was refused admission last night to the Auckland prison. It was stated that the officer on duty was unable to admit the escapee without calling the officer who had charge of the keys. On returning to the gate he found Graves had disappeared.
