BEING RE-FORTIFIED

HELIGOLAND AND OTHER ISLANDS NAVAL CORRESPONDENT’S STATEMENT (United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright) ? LONDON, 17th June. The “Daily Telegraph’s” naval correspondent says that Germany is refortifying Heligoland, which was permanently demilitarised under the Versailles Treaty. Work is reported to be proceeding with the utmost energy. A new harbour is being constructed and powerful batteries installed. Other German North Sea islands re-fortified and heavily armed are Borkum and Wanderoog, which guard the entrance to the Wilhelmshaven naval base, and Norderney and Sylt which are also reported to be strongly defended.
