THE KIWI TRAGEDY

STATEMENTS BY MRS CALDWELL AND DAUGHTER RIFLE PRODUCED TO FRIGHTEN DECEASED A CHARGE TO BE BROUGHT In a statement made yesterday the wife of Mr Joseph Caldwell, who was shot by his daughter during a family quarrel at their home at Kiwi yesterday morning, said that an argument arose at breakfast time over the removal of some sheep from one part of the farm to another, and it resulted in a quarrel. After breakfast deceased commenced to ill-treat her in the kitchen and she called to her daughter for help. Such quarrels were frequent as a result of Caldwell’s bad temper. Deceased frequently used his rifle, which was always left in the house. The daughter, in a statement, said she had intended to frighten her father. Her mental condition at the time was such that she did not remember whether she put a cartridge in the rifle or whether it was loaded. The police stated to-day that a charge against the daughter would be preferred in due course. I No arrest has been made. The girl and her mother are staying with friends in Nelson. Mr Caldwell’s body was brought to Nelson last evening, and the funeral will take place at the Nelson Cemetery to-morrow afternoon after tte inquest has been opened before Mr T. E. Maunsell, S.M., for formal identification purposes. The inquest will probably be proceeded with early next week.
