SWIMMING
LOCAL CLUB’S ANNUAL MEETING Indications are for an early commencement of swimming activities in Nelson for the coming season. The weather continues to produce warm temperatures and the effect is evident by the early date set down for the local club’s annual general meeting, which will be held at the Municipal Baths nevt Thursday evening, commencing at 8 o’clock. In swimming circles it is generally felt that the 1934-35 season should prove a very successful one. It is stated that tho activities of the Nelson Centre in the past season, combined with the efforts of the two local clubs, in training and coaching juniors should produce results this season. The valuable work done during the winter by the Swimmers’ Social Club in keeping the members together must also be taken into consideration. During last season a large number of junior swimmers took part in competitions. As most of these swimmers had been either taught or coached by the local clubs, it is not too much to say that with the continued assistance available, some very fine competitors should take the water this season. The senior ranks, which for some reason have nearly always been in a minority in Nelson swimming clubs, will be supplemented by a large number of last year’s juniors and many of these will prove promising substitutes for the retiring senior swimmers. Last season was probably tho best ever experienced bv Nelson men, when times are compared over nearly all distances, and it is expected that 1934-35 records will be faster still. The work of teaching children to swim was commenced by the clubs last year, but as the season was a short one the progress made was not up to expectations. However, a programme is framed and is to be tabled at the annual general meeting of; the Nelson Amateur Swimming Club on Thursday next, which includes an extensive project for the teaching and coaching of school children and others not proficient in the water and which aims at close co-opera-tion with the local educational staffs and with the Nelson branch of the Royal Life Saving Society. With the organisation available this scheme should grow to one of public importance and the work it may accomplish can b e estimated as invaluable. All tlio.se interested in swimming are invited to attend the annual general meeting of the Nelson Amateur Swimming Club to be held at. the Municipal •Baths ;itß p.m. on Thursday next. ■WEBLEY BROS., Timber Merchants and Joinery Manufacturers, Almast.
