Edwin Payne (8) had one leg almost completely taken oil and the other severed below the knee when ho was dragged by an endless wire rope through the jjulley of the Hikurangi coal mine last evening. The hoy and a companion were sitting on the rope when the engine started to take empty skips down the mine. The sutlerer was operated on in hospital and his condition is satisfactory.
