FATAL FIRE

WOMAN TRAPPED IN WASHHOUSE (By Telegraph—Press Association) CHRISTCHURCH. This Day. A fatal fire occurred at the residence of Mr J. Gressor, a well-known solicitor, in Fcndalton road, this morning, when his wife was trapped in a burning washhouse. She received burns from which she died a few minutes after rescue by her daughter. The late Mrs Grcsson was 40 years of ago. She was a sister of Dr. Hamilton Gould and a member of a well-known Canterbury family. She bad been m poor health for a number of years. Apparently she went into tho washhouse to attend to a fire in the copper. The first person to discover that the washhouse was on fire was Miss Bridget Gresson. who dashed in among the thick smoke and found her mother with her clothes in flames, lying on the floor. She dragged her mother out and extinguished the flames, but Mrs Gresson died in a few minutes. Mr Gresson was then, at 9.15 a.m., on his way to his office, and was recalled to the scene. The brigade prevented the names spreading to the house, a large twostoried building. Airs Gresson was a niece of Mr George Gould. She is survived by a husband, two sons, and one dauglier.
